Former Argentina coach Jose Pekerman begins talks with Colombia
The trainer, who is renowned for his work with youth, is deep in discussion with Colfutbol and has emerged as the favourite to succeed Leonel Alvarez on the bench
By Daniel Edwards
Caracol revealed that the head of the federation met with the coach's agent in Bogota on Tuesday, where the pair discussed the possibility of hiring Pekerman as the successor to Leonel Alvarez.
Gerardo Martino was Bedoya's first choice, but the ex-Paraguay trainer chose boyhood club Newell's Old Boys of Rosario over the chance to move back into the international game.
"I had an invitation to hear [Bedoya's] proposal and in the next few days we will continue talking," Pascual Lezano said upon leaving the Colfutbol facilities, while the president praised Pekerman's track record in coaching.
"He is a great coach and it would be great for the Colombian federation to count on his services."
Pekerman is best known for his sterling work at youth level, and during his time directing the Argentina Under 20 side he lifted the Youth World Cup on three occasions as well as two South American Championships.
He took over the Albiceleste senior team in 2004, but resigned following a quarter-final exit to Germany in the 2006 World Cup.
