Serie A Team Of The Week: Round 22
Goal.com looks at the best performing players from the 22nd round of the Serie A calendar. Bari have three names in our list after bringing down Palermo...
By Adam Scime
Formation: 3-5-2
Goalkeeper
Gianluca Curci (Siena): Against his former club Roma, he did not deserve to be on the losing side. If not for the 24-year-old, the score would have been much worse for the Tuscans. He was only beaten by unstoppable shots from Riise and Okaka.
Defence
Paolo Cannavaro (Napoli): The centre-back looked like a younger version of his brother Fabio as he commanded the backline against Genoa with aplomb and was excellent in a 0-0 stalemate. The Grifoni could not find a way past him.
Leonardo Bonucci (Bari): The defender opened the scoring for the Galletti, but that’s just a bonus. He receives a place in our best XI for his defensive prowess, making many crucial interceptions in a very open match at the Stadio San Nicola.
John Arne Riise (Roma): The Norwegian is going through a purple patch, illustrated by his sizzling volley against Siena to open the scoring. Under coach Claudio Ranieri the left-back has found his confidence and drive, that made him one of the best left-backs in football while at Liverpool.
Midfield
Edgar Alvarez (Bari): The Honduran international split the Palermo defence time and time again with his darting runs and showed many of the Rosanero defenders a clean set of heels on Saturday. The winger has been one of the standouts in Serie A this season and this performance illustrated all his talent.
Massimo Ambrosini (Milan): Grit and determination from the veteran Italian for the full 90 minutes. He looked in good shape as he won plenty of balls in the middle, distributed to his team-mates, and even scored a goal. Some of the Rossoneri’s players looked down and out, but not Ambro.
Mohamed Sissoko (Juventus): The most positive aspect of his game is his tireless running. The Bianconeri bossed the midfield battle against Lazio thanks to the Malian’s work at both ends of the pitch.
Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria): The Blucherchiati captain is leading the team in the absence of Antonio Cassano. He leaves everything on the field and was the main catalyst in the 2-0 win over struggling Atalanta, scoring the side’s first goal on 36 minutes.
Andrea Cossu (Cagliari): A pity he was sent off for a second bookable offence against Fiorentina, because he was having a fine match. The playmaker dictated the pace of the game while he was on the field with pinpoint passes and exemplary decision making while in possession.
Attack
Stefano Okaka (Roma): He may be on his way to Fulham, but the youngster repaid the faith shown in him by scoring a fantastic back-heel winning goal. Great execution.
Barreto (Bari): Another person who is in great form is the Brazilian striker, who has scored nine goals in his last eight league matches. Against Palermo he converted a penalty, provided an inspired assist for the killer goal, and held up the ball well when needed. An all-around fantastic striker’s performance.

Here's the thoughts of Benfica coach Jorge Jesus, who felt his side deserved a point from the game.
"They were the better team on the night and that's the story of the day.
"We have to keep fighting, pick ourselves up, get the confidence back and challenge in the other competitions and in the second leg of this tie too.
"They punished us on every occasion; they scored some quality goals and they deserved to win."

“The score made it look like it was an easy game, but it certainly wasn't.
(Strange... it looked pretty easy from where I was sitting, but hey.)
“I do not think it's over yet. I remember a clash between Milan and Deportivo la Coruna when Milan was also ahead by four goals, and in the end Deportivo eliminated Milan.
“I went into the Arsenal dressing room after the match to speak to Robin van Persie. I had agreed with him to swap shirts – my sons are big fans of his and he brought two for them. They will be delighted.
Van Bommel went on to talk about a possible move to PSV in the future, but was quick to point out his terms for the move.
“I've spoken with PSV, but we don't have an agreement yet. The club has to decide what they want.
“If Louis van Gaal turns out to be the new coach, I won't go.”
"Tonight everything went in the right direction and we did a very good match. You don't start a match thinking to win 4-0, but at the end i think we deserved it coz we played very well."
