Who is Manchester United's Player of the Season?

Who is Manchester United's Player of the Season?

Latest Echoes of Ronaldo as brilliant Bale steps up to world class level Previous

Goal.com names the top three stand-out performers for the Red Devils in 2011-12 and then declares the overall winner. Have your say below!

Manchester United go into the final weekend of the season with the outcome of their season-long battle for the Premier League title with rivals Manchester City still hanging in the blanace.

A mixed campaign looks like it may well end up as a trophyless one for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, with the group stage Champions League exit and two defeats to City in the league standing out as significant low moments.

But 2011-12 was a campaign that did produce some memorable highlights for United, beating old rivals Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford, knocking City out of the FA Cup and an impressive run of four straight league wins with 16 goals scored in December.

Below, in alphabetical order, are Goal.com's three nominees for United's player of the season, based on their club performances in all competitions. We then cast our vote at the bottom before leaving it up to you, the readers, to have your say.

WAYNE ROONEY | ATTACKER

Cup 1 2 0 0 0
Europe 7 6 1 1 0

Total 42 34 5 1 0

Wayne Rooney has enjoyed one of his best season's at Old Trafford since arriving at the club in 2004 and has already matched his highest goals tally (34) with a game of the campaign still to play.

In the past, the striker has often been a player who scores goals in bursts, but this season he has been more consistent in front of goal - never going more than five successive games without finding the net.

Rooney started the season on fire, scoring hat-tricks in the 8-2 and 5-0 wins over Arsenal and Bolton respectively. He made his mark in big games too, scoring twice against Manchester City in the FA Cup and in Premier League games against Chelsea and Liverpool.

PAUL SCHOLES | MIDFIELDER

Cup 2 0 0 0 0
Europe 2 0 0 0 0

Total 20 4 0 2 0

Paul Scholes' return from retirement was one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window as United turned to the old maestro as they struggled with injuries and suspensions in midfield.

Even the man himself must be surprised by the impact he has made, fitting seamlessly straight back into the side despite six months out of the game and being 37 years of age.

The experienced campaigner has dictated play from midfield, re-established himself as a first-choice player in the biggest games and showed that he has not lost his eye for goal, with his goal against Swansea on Sunday adding to strikes against Bolton, Norwich and QPR.

ANTONIO VALENCIA | MIDFIELDER

Cup 5 1 1 0 0
Europe 6 1 1 0 0
Other 0 0 0 0 0
Total 37 6 15 3 0

After missing the start of the season through injury, Antonio Valencia returned to his best form in 2011-12, reminding the Old Trafford faithful exactly of what they had been missing when he has been stuck on the sidelines.

The flying winger's direct approach and pace has tormented full-backs, particularly in the second half of the season and his assists tally is one of the highest in the Premier League.

The Ecuador international has chipped in with a few goals too, netting a crucial goal in an away win over Arsenal before his strike at Ewood Park against Blackburn looked like it was going to be a decisive one in the title race, before the Red Devils' recent struggles.

WINNER: WAYNE ROONEY

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
Arsenal (h) W 8-2 SCORED HAT-TRICK IN FAMOUS VICTORY
Man City (a) W 3-2 DOUBLE PROVES DECISIVE IN FA CUP DERBY
Liverpool (h) W 2-1 TWO GOALS AGAINST FIERCE RIVALS

While Valencia has proven to be such a lethal threat down the wing through spurts of the season and Scholes' return to the side has been influential in sustaining United's title challenge, Rooney gets our vote for Player of the Season.

The England man has scored goals in good numbers consistently throughout the year - something he has not always done - and continues to be the player United rely on to spearhead their assault for major honours.
