Socceroo Tim Cahill failed to make it two goals in two games after ending his long Everton goal drought last weekend, hitting the woodwork in Friday's 2-1 FA Cup victory over Fulham.

The Australian midfielder played a full game in the win over the Cottagers, going close on several occasions before smashing a close-range header into the crossbar at 2-1.

Cahill had endured a difficult 13-month Everton goal drought until last weekend's strike against Blackburn and he nearly made it two in two.

The Socceroo forced a good save from David Stockdale at 1-0 down and squeezed a shot wide on the stroke of interval, while his best chance came on 77 minutes but he could only rattle the crossbar from six yards out.

In Italy's Serie B, Carl Valeri opened his goalscoring account for the season with a well-placed header in Sassuolo's 2-0 win over fellow promotion contenders Hellas Verona.

The result moves Sassuolo one point clear in the race for promotion in Italy's second tier.
