Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez believes his side deserved a better fate than their 3-2 loss to Germany in the third/fourth playoff match of the World Cup.

A hugely entertaining fixture swung this way then that before a late looping header from Sami Khedira finally broke the Celeste’s resistance. Tabarez, however, believes the final score paints the game in unfavourable terms for his side.

“We achieved an equal game against a real power,” he is quoted as having told La Observa after the game. “We could have won because in the game were not superior to us.”

The coach is nevertheless optimistic about the future, claiming that despite being the “surprise” package of the World Cup finals, that this can be the “beginning” of a great era for his side.

“We're not that far away [from the best team], the route has been marked. We must learn from this [campaign],” he explained.

The Celeste return home on Monday, when they are expected to receive a tremendous welcome from their compatriots.
