World Player of the Week: Siem de Jong – Ajax

Join Goal.com in saluting another player worthy of global recognition

Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com World Player of the Week #104: Siem de Jong (Castrol Ranking: N/A)
Club: Ajax
Country: Netherlands
Age: 22
Role: Midfielder
Achievement: Scored twice against Twente to win Ajax the Eredivisie

Ajax became champions of the Netherlands for the first time since 2004 on Sunday afternoon after defeating Twente 3-1 in Amsterdam. At the heart of the win was Siem de Jong, who scored twice.

The 22-year-old’s first goal came after 23 minutes. Gregory van der Wiel delivered a terrific cross at pace from the right-hand side that arrived at the back post at the perfect height for De Jong, who kept his head to volley past Nikolay Mihaylov with his left foot.

The Netherlands international then wrapped up the points with 12 minutes left on the clock. The midfielder latched on to an exquisite through-ball from Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen, eluded his marker Douglas and slid the ball home past a helpless Mihaylov.

Congratulations to Siem de Jong, Goal.com's 104th world player of the week!

Honourable Mentions

Luka Modric – Tottenham Hotspur (Castrol Ranking: 310)

The Croatian was wonderful to watch at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday as he found space in between Liverpool’s midfield and defence. Modric controlled the game and also scored from the penalty spot in the second-half.

Mario Gomez – Bayern Munich (Castrol Ranking: 4)

The Germany international striker continued his scoring run as he netted against Stuttgart in the Bavarians’ 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena. Gomez ended the 2010-11 Bundesliga campaign with 28 goals in 32 matches.

Yaya Toure – Manchester City (Castrol Ranking: 275)

The former Barcelona midfielder once again exhibited his importance to Roberto Mancini’s side as he scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Stoke City at Wembley. Toure's well-taken strike after 75 minutes proved to be a historic moment that could well herald a new era for Man City.

Martin Palermo – Boca Juniors (Castrol Ranking: N/A)

The veteran Argentine striker did what he has done time and again for Boca, as he turned up to net his side’s second goal just after the half-hour mark in a 2-0 victory, in what is his final Superclasico.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid (Castrol Ranking: 3)

The Portugal international continues to score for fun as he netted two sensational goals against Villarreal in Madrid’s 3-1 victory in the Primera Division on Sunday evening. Ronaldo’s brace saw him become the first player since Hugo Sanchez to score 38 league goals in a single season in Spain.

Tadanari Lee - Sanfrecce Hiroshima (Castrol Ranking: N/A)

The Japan international scored twice and provided an assist in his side’s 3-2 victory over Yokohama Marinos.
