World Player of the Week: Antonio Briseno - Mexico U-17s

Join Goal.com in saluting another player worthy of global recognition

Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com World Player of the Week #112: Antonio Briseno
Club: Atlas Guadalajara
Country: Mexico
Age: 17
Role: Defender
Achievement: Scored the opener in his side's 2-0 Fifa U-17 World Cup final against Uruguay

Mexico under-17 beat their Uruguayan peers 2-0 on Sunday to win the Fifa U-17 World Cup for the second time in history. Arsenal's Carlos Vela was probably the biggest star of the team that lifted the trophy back in 2005, but this time it was a more defensive-minded player who impressed as captain Antonio Briseno was an example to follow for his team-mates.

The 17-year-old centre-half not only scored the important opener in the final, but also proved to be an inspirational leader in Mexico's other games. Seven wins from as many games say it all and although the individual awards went to Julio Gomez, Jorge Espericueta and Carlos Fierro (golden, silver and bronze ball respectively), Briseno more than deserves some special praise, too.

"Becoming the champions will be a dream come true and the culmination of four years’ hard work with a fantastic group of players," Briseno said ahead of Sunday's final and the Atlas starlet played a vital role in making sure that the Mexicans indeed lived the dream.

Congratulations to Antonio Briseno, Goal.com's 112th World Player of the Week!

Honourable Mentions

Hope Solo - USA Women

The USA goalkeeper put in a heroic performance to help her team past Brazil in the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup. Solo saved a penalty during regular time, but was left without a chance when the referee gave Brazil another chance as Solo had moved off her line before the whistle. However, the 29-year-old got her revenge in the following series of spot kicks as she denied Daiane to eliminate Brazil.

Mario Yepes - Colombia

The AC Milan defender put in an excellent performance in the 0-0 Copa America draw against Argentina to keep Lionel Messi quiet for the full 90 minutes before again hardly putting a foot wrong in the 2-0 win over Bolivia. Colombia are one of only two teams at the Copa that have yet to concede a goal.

Stefan Selakovic - Goteborg

The versatile attacker single-handedly helped his side to a 3-0 win over Syrianska by netting a hat-trick in the final 20 minutes of the game. Goteborg might have been struggling to find their best form this season, but there's little doubt they'll soon move up the table if Selakovic keeps up his current form.
