Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com World Player of the Week #122: Edinson Cavani
Club:
Napoli
Country:
Uruguay
Age:
24
Role:
Striker
Achievement:
Destroyed AC Milan with a hat-trick

Last season, Edinson Cavani was arguably the best striker in Serie A, and this term he looks set to maintain that position. With Napoli appearing genuine contenders for the Scudetto and also hoping for a prosperous adventure in the Champions League, the Uruguay international would have to step up.

And so he has, and in the early stages of the season too. Cavani scored Napoli’s first ever goal in the Champions League (since the competition was rebranded from the old European Cup) when he found the target against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium to secure a 1-1 away draw for the Italian side.

Then, on Sunday evening, the 24-year-old conjured up a scintillating display as he destroyed defending Italian champions AC Milan with a brilliant hat-trick. Cavani’s goals came on 13, 36 and 51 minutes and helped Walter Mazzarri’s side recover from a one-goal deficit to win 3-1 at San Paolo.

Congratulations to Edinson Cavani, Goal.com's 122nd World Player of the Week!

Honourable Mentions

Emmanuel Adebayor – Tottenham Hotspur

The Togolese striker turned on the style for Spurs as he scored twice against Liverpool in their 4-0 Premier League victory at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Radamel Falcao – Atletico Madrid

The Colombia international striker scored a hat-trick in Atletico’s 4-0 home defeat of Racing Santander in the Primera Division on Sunday to follow up his goal against Celtic in the Europa League on Thursday evening. A match the Spanish club won 2-0.

Luuk de Jong – Twente

De Jong helped Twente to a 1-1 draw against Fulham in the Europa League with one goal last week, and he netted two more in their 5-2 Eredivisie win over ADO Den Haag on Sunday.

Lionel Messi – Barcelona

The reigning Spanish and European champions were back to their majestic best as they destroyed Osasuna 8-0 in the Primera Division at Camp Nou. Messi was once again at the heart of the win, as he scored a hat-trick and could have bagged more goals.

Lukas Podolski  - Koln

The German attacker was the hero of the Rhine derby between Bayer Leverkusen and Koln as the visitors ran out 4-1 winners at the BayArena in the Bundesliga. With his two goals, one assist and great class, Podolski gave the Billy Goats their first win in Leverkusen for 15 years.

Franck Ribery – Bayern Munich

The France international winger was on fire over the last few days as he helped destroy Villarreal 2-0 in Spain in the Champions League by setting up Toni Kroos’ opener after just five minutes. Ribery was a constant threat down the flanks against the Yellow Submarine, just as he was against Schalke in the Bundesliga on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen, as he created both goals in their 2-0 away win.
