Goal.com World Player of the Week #124: Frank Lampard
Club: Chelsea
Country: England
Age: 33
Role: Midfielder
Achievement: Scored a hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has been under focus for much of this season, with pundits writing him off as past his best. At 33, the England international is not getting any younger, and the voices only grew louder when he was dropped for recent games by Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas.
However, Lampard has had a great time over the past seven or so days, exhibiting just why others rate him as one of the best players in Europe. He scored in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Valencia at the Mestalla in the Champions League in midweek, putting in an impressive performance in the process.
Then, on Sunday afternoon, Lampard hit his stride again as he netted a hat-trick in his side's 5-1 win against Bolton Wanderers. He was absolutely sensational throughout the match.
Congratulations to Frank Lampard, Goal.com's 124th World Player of the Week!
Honourable Mentions
Hugo Campagnaro – Napoli
Hugo Campagnaro was crucial for Napoli in the past week as they recorded back-to-back wins in the Champions League and in Serie A. The Argentine shut out Villarreal striker Nilmar in their 2-0 home victory and then scored a goal and protected his goal well in their 3-0 triumph over Inter in Milan.
Lee Dong-Gook - Jeonbuk Motors
Lee Dong-Gook fired Jeonbuk Motors into the Asian Champions League semi-finals in midweek with four goals in their 6-1 victory over Cerezo Osaka.
Gao Lin - Guangzhou
Gao Lin scored a double to help Guangzhou clinch the Chinese Super League title on Wednesday. His side have been runaway leaders all season, so this came as no surprise. However, they were trailing 1-0 to Shaanxi before his double, which included a fine volley, turned the game around. They celebrated the title that night after second-placed Beijing could only draw.
Mohammed Abdellaoue - Hannover
Mohammed Abdellaoue opened the scoring away to Vorskla in the Europa League on Thursday and then hit a hat-trick in his side's 3-2 home win over Werder Bremen on Sunday afternoon.
Claudio Marchisio – Juventus
The Italian midfielder scored both goals in Juventus’ important 2-0 victory over AC Milan in Serie A on Sunday evening. Both of Marchisio’s stikes were lucky goals, but his overall contribution and work ethic was impressive and crucial.
Fernando Llorente – Athletic Bilbao
Fernando Llorente scored both goals for Athletic Bilbao in their 2-1 win against Real Sociedad in the Basque derby in the Primera Division in Spain.
Andrew Johnson – Fulham
Andrew Johnson scored a hat-trick for Fulham in their emphatic 6-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League on Sunday and also hit both goals in their 2-0 victory over Odense in the Europa League on Thursday.
