At the start of Euro 2012, Russian youngster Alan Dzagoev was tipped to be one of the stars of the tournament following his impressive performances for CSKA Moscow, and he has wasted no time to showcase his talent.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder was the architect-in-chief of Russia’s comprehensive 4-1 victory over Czech Republic in their opening game in Group A on Friday.

Dzagoev scored two goals against the Czechs to lead Dick Advocaat's side to maximum points to send out a warning to their rivals and the leading favourites at the European Championship.

Congratulations to Alan Dzagoev, Goal.com's 160th World Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mentions

Keisuke Honda - Japan

The CSKA Moscow attacker scored four goals in two World Cup qualifiers over the past week. Honda netted a hat-trick against Jordan in their 6-0 win and once in their 3-0 triumph over Oman.

 Michael Krohn-Dehli – Denmark

Krohn-Dehli was integral in Denmark’s defeat of Netherlands as he scored the only goal in their 1-0 victory. He was a handful for the Dutch defence throughout and tested Maarten Stekelenburg with a powerful shot.

Mario Mandzukic – Croatia

Mandzukic was a handful for the Republic of Ireland defenders and scored two goals in Croatia’s convincing 3-1 victory in their opening Group C game at Euro 2012 on Sunday.

Lionel Messi - Argentina

The 24-year-old put on a majestic performance for his country as they defeated arch-rvials Brazil 4-3 in a friendly encounter. Messi scored a hat-trick, with his third goal the pick of the bunch.

Dimitris Salpingidis – Greece

The PAOK attacker came at the start of the second half against Poland with Greece 1-0 down in the opening game at Euro 2012, and proved to be the saviour. He scored after just six minutes and also won a penalty.

On Sunday, we encouraged our readers to nominate their choices for the best player of the week. Here are some of the comments we received:

Wissam from Lebanon backed Italy international Daniele De Rossi for his performance against Spain in their 1-1 draw in their opening game at Euro 2012.

"De Rossi masterminded Italy's back three and also spread the ball brilliantly. It was a great display from the Roma star and he deserves the award for stopping some of the world's finest attackers."

Lukas in Poland was of the same opinion.

"I believe that the World Player of the Week is Daniele De Rossi. He played a brilliant defensive game against Spain and was a major factor in the Italians carving out a 1-1 draw."

Lucas in Ukraine, though, felt that Messi should be recognised for his feat against Brazil.

"Leo Messi deserves it. He scored a fabulous hat-trick in a seven-goal thriller against Brazil, leading Argentina to a 4-3 victory."

Yazan from Canada too cast his vote in favour of the Barcelona forward.

"Messi should be given the award. Even though it was just a friendly, he still strived forward and scored a great hat-trick against Argentina's rivals. There was no standout performer from either Group A or B at the Euros. Dzagoev may have scored a double but his team were dominating anyway, while Messi's hat-trick was the only way Argentina could have won it."

Mikkel in Denmark, went for Denmark's hero against Netherlands, Krohn-Dehli.

"Michael Krohn-Dehli scored a superb goal that saw Denmark defeat Netherlands in what the most astonishing result at the Euros thus far."

Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments here. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
