Lionel Messi has won the fans' vote for the Goal.com 50 2009-10, edging out the winner of the main award, Wesley Sneijder.

In a week's worth of voting over 131,000 users on every Goal.com network site voted for who they thought was the top player of the season, based on the top 10 shortlist generated by the main Goal.com 50, which was judged by Goal.com's global team of editors.

In a photo finish, the Barcelona and Argentina forward narrowly defeated Sneijder, who became the main award's third winner since its inception in 2008.

Wesley was a close second, while a somewhat distance third was Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo. Barcelona's Xavi and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan rounded off a remarkably Spain-centric top five.

Below can be seen the percentage of votes from across the network:

Here on Goal.com International Messi narrowly defeated Sneijder in a result that was borne out by the rest of the network, but there was very little in it.

Wesley Sneijder received the main award after returning to Inter following a successful World Cup. The midfielder told Goal.com, "I am really proud to have won this award, especially because it means I have done well for Inter and the national team."

Messi, however, won the fans' award off the back of a fantastic individual season with Barcelona, being instrumental in the Blaugrana side's second consecutive La Liga win.

The diminutive dribbling wizard very nearly managed a goal a game in La Liga, scoring 34 in 35 appearances, while he also contributed a career-record 13 assists.

In the Champions League Messi struck a further eight goals, and while he did not hit the back of the net at the 2010 World Cup his performances nonetheless endeared him to the fans sufficiently to win the vote.
