Africans In Spain: Cameroonian Carlos Kameni Spares Espanyol From Bernabeu Demolition

The Espanyol shot-stopper Africa's top performer this weekend...

Carlos Kameni - Espanyol
Carlos Kameni produced a brilliant display in goal for Espanyol on Saturday night yet still ended up on the losing side as Real Madrid strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win. The Blanc i Blau had the 25-year-old Cameroonian to thank as he kept the scoreline some way respectable regularly thwarting Los Merengues as they laid siege on the Catalan visitors.

Frederic Kanoute was on the score sheet as an understrength Sevilla suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Real Zaragoza at La Romareda. Coach Manolo Jimenez recently refuted suggestions that his priority is the Copa del Rey but on the back of this result and their continuing poor league run, he will have a difficult time defending that stance as they prepare to take on Getafe in the second leg in Madrid on Wednesday.

Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure had to fill in at centre back for Barcelona as the champions had Gerard Pique sent off in the 2-1 win over Getafe. Toure was replaced not long after half time by Rafa Marquez, who also saw red in the latter stages. Mali star Seydou Keita played the full 90 minutes for the Blaugrana but his performance was marred by the fact that he missed two glorious opportunities to put the tie beyond all doubt. Derek Boateng of Ghana put in another tireless display for the visitors but they couldn't claw their way back into the tie despite a late penalty from Roberto Soldado.

Modeste M'Bami was a strong presence in midfield for Almeria as they secured a vital 3-1 home win over Sporting Gijon to give themselves a much needed boost in the battle to avoid the drop. The Andalusian outfit went behind after just ten minutes before the three goal fightback.

Malian Sidi Keita was less than impressive as a plucky Xerez fell to Athletic Bilbao in a five goal thriller at San Mames. Despite leading at the break the Primera Liga strugglers couldn't hold on for what would have been their first away win of the season as a Fernando Llorente double condemned them to another defeat, leaving them six points adrift at the foot of the table.

Pierre Webo made a late but ineffective cameo appearance as Mallorca maintained their 100 per cent home record with a hard fought win over Villarreal.

Nigerian striker Victor Obinna and Moroccan forward Nabil Baha were both introduced as second half substitutes but neither could find a breakthrough as Malaga were held to a scoreless draw by Deportivo La Coruna at La Rosaleda. The result now means that the Andalusian side have only lost once in their last 12 Primera Liga outfits, a recent defeat to Real Madrid the only blot on their copy book since early November. Obinna was also quoted as saying this week that he would like to see his loan deal from Inter become a permanent arrangement.

Papakouli Diop of Senegal and Congolese forward Mohamed Tchite were among Racing Santander's better performers in their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at El Sardinero.
