I Will Play In Central Defence If Needed - Spain Stopper Sergio Ramos
Sergio Ramos is ready to answer the call and play in central defence for Spain's match versus Liechtenstein.
By Paul Macdonald
Injuries to centre-backs Carles Puyol and Raul Albiol have left La Roja short defensively, and Ramos is more accustomed to performing in a right full-back role for his nation.
However, the former Sevilla man played in the centre during Real Madrid’s 0-0 draw with Mallorca at the weekend, and speaking to journalists today at their training camp in Switzerland, he confirmed that he will happily fulfil that role for Spain, too.
He said: “I have for many years alternated position between wing and in the centre. Lately I have been playing wide, but casualties might mean I play in the centre [versus Liechtenstein].
“It is a position I know, and I will adapt to the needs of the group.”
Spain compete in Group I, which also includes Lithuania, Scotland, and the Czech Republic, as they begin the defence of the title they lifted in 2008.
