VIDEO: Diego Maradona comments on Falklands War & the General Belgrano

The polemic coach spoke about the AFA's plans to name the Clausura tournament after the sunken warship, a move that has provoked outrage in Great Britain

By Daniel Edwards

Former Argentina coach Diego Maradona cut a sombre figure as he commented on his compatriots' plans to name the next season after a warship sunk during the Falklands War with the United Kingdom.

Although no decision has been finalised, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has discussed calling the upcoming Clausura tournament the 'Crucero General Belgrano'.

This would mark the 30th anniversary of the warship's sinking during the conflict, an act which cost the lives of 323 crew members - almost half of all the casualties suffered by the Argentines during the war.

The proposal has already caused uproar on the other side of the Atlantic, with certain sections of the British media alleging that it is politically-motivated and part of heightened tensions between the two nations.

According to the Al Wasl coach, however, the most important consideration at this time is to leave politics behind and remember those who perished in the maritime disaster.
