Santos' Neymar named Best Player of 2011 Copa Libertadores
The six-goal hero of the Peixe's winning campaign was awarded the prize by sponsors Banco Santander, and pledged to finish 2011 on a winning note
By Daniel Edwards
The 19-year-old, who recently pledged his future to the Peixe until 2014, attended the event organised by competition sponsors Banco Santander, which doubled as the official announcement of a commercial partnership between the player and the banking giants.
Speaking to gathered reporters, Neymar was delighted at the success he has experienced in 2011, and warned that there was more to come before the year was out.
"It has been a wonderful year, but it is not over yet," said the teenager, accompanied by his father and by agent Wagner Ribeiro.
"There is still the Brasileirao to finish on a high, and also the Club World Cup."
Neymar netted six goals in the Libertadores, which Santos won for the first time since 1963 with victory in the final over Penarol. He received a $60,000 [€45,000] cheque, which he immediately donated to a local charity that cares for children who are suffering from cancer.
"It makes me very happy to help. I have been helped a great deal in my life and I know that it makes a difference. I will continue helping these kids to have a better future," he added.
The young star has already been confirmed in Santos' first XI to take on Bahia, with kick-off scheduled on Sunday at 20.00CET.
