Recopa Sudamericana First-Leg: Independiente 2-1 Internacional

A spirited comeback put Independiente in front in South America's battle of the continental champions, but Antonio Mohamed knows that his team will have to battle hard to defend a slim one-goal lead in the return match back in Porto Alegre.

The 2010 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana champions met in Independiente's Estadio Libertadores de America on Wednesday evening, and it was the Brazilians who opened the scoring. Nei left Gabriel Milito standing on the right hand side and made it to the byline, and his low cross was turned past Hilario Navarro by international striker Leandro Damiao.

The Argentines needed to lift their game, and responded brilliantly to level matters just five minutes later. Leonel Nunez swung a teasing cross into the danger zone, and defender Maxi Velazquez's header had just enough power to beat Muriel in the Inter goal.

Both sides had intermittent spells of dominance after half-time, albeit with little danger of either breaking the deadlock - Tinga was one notable example, rocking the Rojo crossbar with a stinging shot. That changed, however, with just over 15 minutes on the clock thanks to new arrival Marco Perez.

The Colombian striker smashed home a free kick on the edge of the area to mark a debut goal for Independiente, aided by a generous deflection which wrong-footed Muriel.

The two teams will meet in the return match on August 24, in Inter's Beira Rio home.
