Central Coast Mariners Defender Dean Heffernan Moves To Huddersfield Town
The full-back is League One-bound.
Central Coast Mariners defender Dean Heffernan has moved to English League One side Huddersfield Town for the rest of the season, as he looks to boost his chances of going to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Heffernan is widely considered a possible bolter in Pim Verbeek's final squad and his move overseas comes as no surprise with the Mariners potentially set to miss out on the finals series and see an early end to their season.
The full-back started and scored in Australia's recent Asian Cup Qualifier awaya gainst Kuwait, turning in an impressive performance and doing his chances of going to the World Cup no harm.
A dearth of options at left-back for Verbeek means a European move could well give Heffernan an edge in the race for a place in his 23-man squad and the Mariners have wished the defender luck.
“Whilst wishing Dean all the best, we are now fully focused on the immediate goal of qualifying for the Hyundai A-League finals series,” said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.
Heffernan became the 13th player to represent the Mariners after coming on as a substitute in the club’s second ever competitive match, a 4-nil victory over Adelaide United in the 2005 Club World Championship.
The 29-year-old went on to play 83 competitive matches for the club, 65 of those in the Hyundai A-League, scoring 10 goals.
