Football Federation Australia are at an "advanced stage" in the process of appointing the new head coach of the Socceroos, says National Technical Director Han Berger.

Speaking at a teleconference where he announced a 20-man squad for the upcoming friendly match against Slovenia, the acting Socceroo manager was coy on who would succeed Pim Verbeek.

"We are at an advanced stage with our process [of appointing] the next 'Roos head coach and we hope to be in a position to announce the successful candidate in the near future," Berger said.

The Dutchman refused to reveal whether the new coach would be attending the Slovenia match.

Recent 'speculation' - namely the opinion of resident commentator and former international Robbie Slater - has seen Diego Maradona linked with the vacant post.

Berger recently dismissed the suggestion and has given no further indication as to the identity of the individual, though former Cameroon boss Paul Le Guen represents the strongest link to the position.

When asked whether there was any chance he himself might have to lead the national team through the 2011 Asian Cup if negotiations with the prospective new manager fell through, Berger responded by stating there was "zero chance" he would take up the role permanently.
