Senegal have decided to fire coach Amara Traore in the wake on their disappointing performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Senegal Football Federation made the decision in Dakar in response to three successive defeats at the ongoing Afcon in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, leaving them bottom of Group A with no points to speak of.

The Senegalese lost to co-hosts Equatorial Guinea in their opening match, before further defeats to Zambia and Libya.

This was particularly shocking considering the fact that the Teranga Lions were seen as one of the favourites to lift the trophy on February 12 in Libreville.

Their stunning display in qualifying, where they topped a group that included Cameroon and DR Congo, led many people to believe this would be Senegal's year.

"The responsibility of the coach for these results is incontestable," the federation said in a statement.

Karim Sega and Aliou Cisse have been named as the caretaker coaches until a permanent appointment is made. Senegal's next match is a friendly international against South Africa in Durban on February 29.
