Africans In France: Gervinho Strikes Again
Massaer Ndiaye takes a look at the performances of the African players plying their trade in France, with a number of them impressing this past week...
Already impressive last weekend against Lyon, Cedric Mongongu
(Congo) spent half the week with his family in mourning.
But that hasn't prevented him from having two stellar performances, covering from much more talked-about players such as Puygrenier and installing himself as the boss of the Monaco defense. He is already the best defender they have. If he keeps his performances up, the 20 year-old will quickly make the move to bigger and better clubs than Monaco.
In the Southwestern derby between Toulouse and Bordeaux, the defending champions kept their record great by beating the Toulouse side who were everything but expiating victims.
The purples scored first very early on (fourth minutes thanks to Machado) but Moroccan Marouane Chamakh equalized with a beautiful header at the ninth minute. His sixth goal of the season was once again a header for a player who has vowed once again this wee that he would finish the year with Bordeaux.
The game, mostly dominated by Toulouse, didn't give Chamakh and his teammates the opportunity to shine alone up-top until he was able to pass the ball to Wendel at the 76th minute and the Brazilian scored his own fourth goal of the season.
Kenyan striker Dennis Olliech scored his first two goals of the season against Marseilles, at the Velodrome. Auxerre came in commando-style and played tactically to perfection against a Marseille team who were way too focused on other things like the mercato to play the game correctly.
Jean Fernandez trusted his man, and Olliech didn't disappoint. If his output was quiet in the game itself he managed to shoot twice and both times, he scored.
Once again, against Nancy this time, Lille scored four times, two of those goals belonging to the best player in France at the moment, Gervinho. This column could be named the Gervinho chronicles and nobody should be able to complain.
The Ivorian phenom is getting better by the match and scoring his eleventh and twelfth goals of the season before leaving for Angola is not a bad way to bid farewell to your teammates at all. Him and his buddy Eden Hazard didn't give Nancy a chance to come back in the game.
Beninese striker Mickael Pote managed to score the first double of his career against Boulogne in the 2-2 draw between Nice and the northerners. His performances will come as excellent news for the Squirrels and their french head-coach Michel Dussuyer one month prior to the Angola AFCON.
Another excellent news for Michel Dussuyer is the apparent return of his genius, midfielder Stephane Sessegon. In Paris Saint-Germain's last game of the season, the ex-Le Mans Player was everywhere. Even if he didn't assist nor score, his incessant activity was reminiscent of the Sessegnon of last year, which can only mean good things for both his club and his country.
One player whose behavior was not good and who drew attention to himself was Asamoah Gyan. The Ghanaian got a red card at the 11th minute of his team game against Sochaux. Rennes subsequently lost 2-0. His team played with ten players for the whole match and basically were just outnumbered by a very serious Sochaux squad.
