CAF has eventually allowed AFC Leopards to field their new squad in the Confederation Cup. Cecafa secretary general Nicholas Musonye intervened to have the club’s second list of players allowed to play in their preliminary round, first leg match against Bank of Ethiopia on Sunday in Nairobi.
CAF's competition committee had rejected the 30-man second list sent by AFC Leopards well after the deadline to replace their original squad of 24 submitted in December.
But Musonye broke the good news to ‘Ingwe’ fans yesterday when he spoke to the Daily Nation.
"I have talked with Khaled Nasser and Madam Abla [CAF director of clubs and competition]. They have agreed that Leopards can use the second list. But all the players will have to be validated before the match. The match commissioner will be instructed accordingly," Musonye said.
Musonye sits in the CAF media and national associations committees and enjoys some influence within the African football body.
CAF was expected to officially communicate the new arrangement to Football Kenya Limited.
The reprieve now allows the most popular and best supported club in Kenya to return to continental football after almost a decade's absence.
