Barcelona President Joan Laporta To Visit Rwanda Next Week

Barcelona president Joan Laporta will next week visit refugee camps in Rwanda which the club’s foundation and the UNHCR/ACNUR have been financing for the past two years.

According to the club website, www.fcbarcelona.cat, Laporta will visit camps at Gihembe, Kiziba and Nyabiheke, which are home to a combined population of over 35,000 created as a result of the conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups.

Barcelona said their charitable foundation had constructed sports facilities and care centres and helped train teachers at the camps.

The camps were set up to cater for survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. The visits will be carried out on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Foundation has helped improve the educational infrastructure and professional workshops at these camps, and has also constructed sports facilities and a multi-purpose care centre. They have also set up an action plan for training the camps’ educators.

The Fundacio FC Barcelona signed in January 2008 is a collaboration agreement with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR/ACNUR). Since then, the agreement has led to initiatives in three countries: Rwanda, Nepal and Ecuador.
