Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been released on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle.

The ex-Newcastle United and Tottenham star was taken into custody on Sunday night after a disturbance at a takeaway in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire.

The 42-year-old and another man were questioned by officers on Monday morning, before being released on bail pending further inquiries.

North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the takeaway at 9.10pm on Sunday after reports of a disturbance.

Gazza and a 40-year-old man were both arrested on suspicion of being drunk whilst in charge of a motor vehicle.

The former England legend was sectioned three times under the Mental Health Act in 2008 and has faced a long battle with alcoholism and depression.
