Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has hailed the recent performances of midfielder Cesc Fabregas claiming the Gunners icon would be "sad' if he left the north London club.

Reports had linked the playmaker with a move to Barcelona in recent days, with a Spanish radio station claiming that a deal had already been agreed between the clubs that he would move in the summer.

Almunia would be disappointed to see the skipper leave the Emirates.

"Nobody has any doubt that Cesc gives everything to the game," the keeper said, according to Press Association Sport.

"He makes tackles and fights - this is the only thing that the people can expect from him.

"For the supporters, Cesc is a symbol of the club. For the people, he is the best.

"I have no doubts that he loves the club and Arsenal in general.

"If he has to go, and I don't know anything, he will be very sad."

Almunia also blames club directors and owners in his homeland for spending too long in the media speculating about possible transfer targets.

"The presidents and people at clubs talk too much. They are in the press much more than they should be," he added.

"In England, I have never seen the directors in the press and so it is strange for me."

Wednesday night's 1-0 win over Liverpool also keeps the Gunners in the title race as far as Almunia is concerned, though he concedes that rivals' slip-ups are really what has kept them in the hunt.

"If we are still in the title race, it is because the other teams didn't win," he said.

"We will, though, be back in the race if we win three or four games in a row."
