Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli will undergo an operation on his knee in a hospital in Pavia near Milan on Thursday.

Sky Sport 24 had earlier claimed that the Italy international will go under the knife to cure his knee problems. 'Super Mario' picked up the injury in City's match against FC Timisoara in a Europa League qualifier on August 19.

Now City themselves have confirmed on their official website that the 20-year-old will undergo a surgery and have also indicated that the former Inter player could be ruled "out for up to six weeks."

A statement on the club's official website reads:

"The Italian's injury is to the lateral meniscus, one of the two most crucial structures in the knee, and medical wisdom is to try and encourage the problem to heal without recourse to an operation.

"It was hoped that the symptoms would settle down but once Balotelli began to step up his recovery programme this week, it became clear that action would need to be taken."

The 20-year-old is now set to miss the Premier League home fixture against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday as well as games against Chelsea and Arsenal. Balotelli is also set to miss the Europa League fixture against Juventus.
