Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Patrice Evra should shake hands with Liverpool's Luis Suarez as the two players prepare to meet for the first time since the latter's ban.

Suarez will return from his eight-match ban, for racial abuse towards the French left-back, in time to face Tottenham on Monday night, and is expected to play from the start in next weekend's rival clash.

When questioned on the subject, Sir Alex feels that Evra would not lose any face were he to shake hands with his Uruguayan opponent.

"Patrice has shown the courage to fight it by complaining about it, so therefore he has nothing to be ashamed of and I don’t think it’s a problem shaking hands,” said the Scot.

Sir Alex insists that Evra did the right thing at the height of the row between the clubs and now the incident must be put to rest.

“He should be applauded for what he did. The matter’s now over and he can rise above it.”
