Olympique de Marseille will play in the Coupe de la Ligue final at the Stade de France in the spring after showing great character to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Toulouse on Wednesday evening, a result that left coach Didier Deschamps glowing with content.

Le Tefece seemed in command after producing a strong second half performance, during which they scored the game’s opening goal through Andre-Pierre Gignac and threatened on several more occasions. OM had barely had a sniff of goal for 45 minutes when Brandao popped up a little before full-time to take the game into two addition periods. Towards the end of the first half of extra-time, the bulldozing Brazilian grabbed what proved to be the match-winning goal.

“The most important thing is that we qualified,” he considered after the game, according to Ligue 1’s official website. “That’s what we came here for.

“We had a good first half but couldn’t convert our domination. It took a lot of character and desire for us to get back into the match the way we did.

“Once again we conceded an unnecessary goal but we managed to get out of jail. I don’t know whether we deserved to win but really qualifying is everything.”

His counterpart on the Toulouse bench, Alain Casanova, was upset for his side, who enjoyed the best moments of the game but could not score the all-important second goal.

“We can only be extremely disappointed because we were so close to scoring again. It’s really tough,” he lamented. “In the second half we let loose and really we deserved the win given the effort we put in. But it played out on the smallest details. If we could have held out for five more minutes, we would have been on our way to the Stade de France.”

OM will face either Lorient or Girondins de Bordeaux in the final, which is pencilled in for Saturday, March 27.
