Ligue 1 : Didier Deschamps (Olympique de Marseille)
Didier Deschamps confessed that he is encouraged by Olympique de Marseille’s recent progress after watching his side romp to an impressive 5-1 victory over Valenciennes on Sunday night.

OM qualified for the final of the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday evening via a 2-1 extra-time success over Toulouse and backed that victory up in magnificent style at the weekend. First half goals from Lucho Gonzalez and Brandao had them well in command before Benoit Cheyrou added a third early in the second period. Though Carlos Sanchez pulled one back for the guests, Mathieu Valbuena and substitute Mamadou Niang rounded off a very pleasing evening for the boss.

“Sometimes you have nights like this one,” he smiled after the match, according to Ligue 1’s official website. “I’m very pleased with what I saw tonight as well as happy with the support our fans gave us.”

With les Phoceens claiming a victory and league leaders Girondins de Bordeaux losing, the gap at the top could be cut to six points if the Provence side win their game in hand against Sochaux, though Deschamps doesn’t yet believe the title is possible.

“I won’t say that we’re back in the title race even though there is some fantastic energy here in Marseille now,” he explained. “We need to stay clear-headed and take a maximum of points in February and March before the home stretch in April. That’s when we’ll see whether we can push for the title or not.”

Hatem Ben Arfa was afforded a rare start and produced a wonderful performance, though he emphasised the work of the whole after the fixture. “I really felt that the team was in tune, there was some real chemistry out there,” he said. “It was certainly one of our most accomplished performances.”

Next weekend, Marseille face a tough trip to Monaco, though they must first tackle Racing Club de Lens in the Coupe de France.
