Ligue 1 Team Of The Week: Round 27
None of the top five in Le Championnat earned maximum points this week, so there are a number of fresh faces in this week’s best XI, though there are equally decisive contributors from the very best too...
By Robin Bairner
Goalkeeper
Fabien Audard (Lorient): There were several fine goalkeeping performances in Ligue 1 this weekend, but Audard won his side a point against Olympique de Marseille on Sunday. He made several outstanding blocks throughout the course of the game to deny OM the opportunity to improve their lead at the top of the table. A special note goes to Cedric Carrasso of Girondins de Bordeaux, who saved two penalties against Montpellier and is only overlooked because of a late fumble that cost his side two points. Despite his late error, it took a massive performance to edge him out.
Defence
Mapou Yangambiwa (Montpellier): La Paillade needed a brave performance in Bordeaux on Sunday night to maintain their title hopes, and they got just that from their right-sided defender. The 20-year-old competed superbly with the champions on a physical and technical level, deserving his place in the best XI of the week.
Adama Coulibaly (Auxerre): That AJA picked up three points against Valenciennes on Saturday evening was in part down to the solidarity of their rearguard, and no one was more reliable than Coulibaly, who was enormous in his duel against the dangerous VA attack.
Laurent Koscielny (Lorient): Another Merlus to make his way into the Team of the Week, Koscielny has performed at a consistently high level this season but made the grade thanks to his decisive goal scoring contribution against Marseille on Sunday. Lorient’s defence wasn’t entirely stable against OM, but the young centre-back was in strong form in their rearguard, holding them together in Sylvain Maarchal’s absence.
Carlos Bocanegra (Stade Rennais): The form of the American and Rennes’ rearguard has been somewhat up and down over the course of the season, but the former Fulham man impressed against Monaco. Not only did he help his side earn a clean sheet, he also snatched the winning goal.

Midfield
Julien Feret (Nancy): A fine performance in the offensive area of Nancy’s midfield from the former Reims man. Has proved himself to be a key element in ASNL’s offensive play for much of the season and shouldered the responsibility that the absent Youssouf Hadji would normally carry too. His passing was perceptive and created several chances for his side.
Delvin Ndinga (Auxerre): Young Congo international Ndinga is slowly establishing himself as a real talent in Le Championnat, and performances such as Saturday’s against Valenciennes have showcased just why. Industrious in the heart of the midfield, he won a great deal of possession for his side and then used the ball safely and sensibly, allowing the more creative players to shine.
Lucho Gonzalez (Olympique de Marseille): After a slow start at Stade Velodrome, Lucho is coming into form and was again an important figure as OM drew 1-1 with Lorient. Created a host of chances for his team-mates with his excellent passing and would surely have enjoyed an assist or two but for Audard’s fine goalkeeping.
Sylvain Marveaux (Rennes): This was a tight choice between Marveaux and Hatem Ben Arfa, who was lively for Marseille, but Marveaux wins the race by a nose. The 23-year-old was a persistent threat on the left side of midfield, and his technique was flawless against Monaco. Stood out in a fixture that otherwise lacked true offensive quality.
Forwards
Marouane Chamakh (Girondins de Bordeaux): Played a vital role in helping Bordeaux to a point against Montpellier on Sunday. Was forced to lead the line alone after the dismissal of Michael Ciani in the first half, and performed that task impressively. Struck the game’s opening goal with a smart instinctive strike from the edge of the box that flew into the corner of the net.
Ireneusz Jelen (Auxerre): Another shining performance from Jelen helped carry Auxerre to three important points in their quest for Europe. Aided by sidekick Roy Contout, the Pole produced a real cutting edge to a team that otherwise struggles to score goals, running through to finish coolly in a game of few chances. Now up to seven goals in just 16 starts this term, he deserves to be recognised as one of the league’s best.
