Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that Domingos Paciencia has been sacked as coach, with the club wasting no time in naming Ricardo Sa Pinto as his replacement.
Sporting president Godinho Lopes had insisted after Saturday's shock defeat at Maritimo that Domingos' position was secure in spite of a poor run of results.
However, Sporting issued a statement on their official website on Monday announcing a change of leadership.
"Elimination from the group stages of the Portuguese Cup and fifth position in the current Liga ZON Sagres campaign does not correspond with the administration’s objectives for the first season of its mandate," the press release read.
"Furthermore, we would like to note that we have reached an agreement with coach Domingos Paciencia, who we would like to thank for his professional manner and dedication towards Sporting Clube de Portugal. We wish him all the best in his future career.
"The administration of Sporting Lisbon has decided that Ricardo Sa Pinto will assume immediate responsibility for the role of first team coach, with a contract valid until June 2013."
Former Braga boss Paciencia only arrived at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in May of last year but he has paid the price for failing to inspire a title challenge.
Sporting have now turned to Sa Pinto, who enjoyed two spells with the club during his playing days before embarking upon a successful stint in charge of the club's youth team.
