Age: 32
Position: Goalkeeper
International Caps: 58 caps
Current Club: Everton F.C.
Overview: Yes, Clint Dempsey had arguably the greatest offensive season of any American playing abroad but Howard has had a career year for Everton as well. Catch the highlights of Everton’s season ending victory over Chelsea and it is clear to see why he is considered to be one of the top shot-stoppers in the world.
In order to win games, the United States will have to figure out its best lineup offensively but Howard’s dominance at goal keeps the squad in almost every game. The United States could potentially face several top-class forwards as Costa Rica will have Bryan Ruiz and Mexico features Manchester United’s breakout star Javier Hernandez. The team will have to be solid defensively in order to progress. As proven in its recent match against Argentina, when Howard is on form the U.S. is very difficult to beat.
Considering the struggles of Oguchi Onyewu and the Stars and Stripes well-documented weakness at left back, United States head coach Bob Bradley will likely have to turn to two new starters in the United States backline. If that happens, the U.S. will have to heavily rely on the 32-year-old’s leadership in the back to create a proper synergy.
Career Defining Moment: Howard’s eight-save performance against Spain in the United States’ 2-0 upset in the 2009 Confederations Cup was a sight to behold considering Spain’s firepower up top in David Villa and Fernando Torres. His performance drew comparisons to Italy's Guanluighi Buffon’s magnificence during the 2006 World Cup.
Strengths: A former basketball player, Howard is extremely athletic and utilizes his athleticism to make highlight reel saves on a game to game basis. His fiery demeanor on the pitch rallies a U.S. defense that is usually on its backheel.
Weakness: While usually flawless between the posts, Howard can occasionally suffer from mental lapses that can be detrimental to a team that heavily relies on him.
